Senate House Revealed – Talking Underground

Tickets for the Senate House Revealed Project that I have co-organised with Michael Eades, Carlos Galviz and John Stone at The University of London’s School of Advanced Study as part of the 2015 Being Human festival were put on general release yesterday. Places for the limited exclusive tours are already nearly all gone but there are still quite a few places available for the Talking Underground event which will see me chair a panel of experts on urban exploration, architectural enthusiasm and Senate House including Bradley Garrett (Southampton), Paul Dorbraszyzk (UCL), Hilary Geohagen (Reading), Claire Launchbury (SAS), Henry Irving (Leeds Beckett) and Richard Simpson (SAS). Many more people with knowledge and expertise in these areas will be among the audience not least the other event organisers!

The project tours will reveal Senate House’s hidden geographies, histories and heritages to a wider audience during the 12th and 13th November and will be capped by the panel event. The latter is framed by the title, Everybody Explore: The Problems and Possibilities of Growing Public Enthusiasm for Urban Exploration and will depart from the following provocation:

Urban Exploration, the act of researching, accessing and photographing abandoned, incomplete and infrastructural places (Garrett 2013), is growing in popularity as indicated by the explosion of popular and academic publications, websites and blogs and even computer games and movies dedicated to the practice. However, there is also a growing acknowledgment, that Urbex, as the practice is colloquially known, is an exclusionary pastime, at least in its original invocation, which privileges particular demographics, subjects and bodies. For example some argue that “urban space, perhaps most especially the type of space favoured by urban explorers, simply is not open or accessible in the same ways to all” and emphasise how the practice can exclude racialised groups, women and disabled people while calling for research into the conditions of its liberatory experiences (Mott & Roberts 2013; 2014, 236). Beyond these critiques urban explorers have themselves been accused of the selfish pursuit of their particular libertarian agendas without concern for the circumstances and feelings of the local communities connected to the places they access and record. Such sentiments have been particularly marked in Detroit, the American city considered by many, thanks to its post-industrial decline, to be the mecca of urban exploration. For example, in Mark Binelli’s book, Detroit City is the Place to Be: The Afterlife of an American Metropolis one of the city’s residents remarks:

“People don’t understand how offensive ‘urban exploration’ is to us. Just the arrogance of it. What do you think would happen if four black kids went into one of those buildings? They’d be arrested. White kids? All right, go home son.”   (2012, 285)

Meanwhile within urbex communities their is growing concern that the widening interest in the activity is eroding it authenticity as cultural practice and undermining  some of its constitutive philosophies – in particular those linked to its potential status as an expression of resistance to the neoliberal control and securitisation of urban space (see Kindynis 2015).

How then can these critiques, concerns and perceptions be overcome and the possible benefits of urban exploration be realised, and what, in fact, are these benefits? What histories, heritages, memories, geographies and experiences can urbex help communicate and what can it contribute to our understanding of the cities in which we live and their constituent urban politics. What are the true limits and conditions to the practice’s wider adoption? One potential way to breach these questions is to emphasise urbex’s position within a continuum of activities that reflect a broader architectural enthusiasm (Craggs et al 2013) and in doing so highlight the possibility for everyone to explore the less frequented parts of the city in multiple ways and through multiple technologies.

The project website also contains reflections offered by event’s panelists, sneak preview photographs of the buildings hidden spaces and, in time, will also host tour videos and hopefully content generated by the project participants using social media under #SenateHouseRevealed and #BeingHuman2015 .
